I met my old friend Mark Jones in the First Grade at the Glass Factory Bay School in the Town of Geneva.
My father always called Mark’s father Charley “Salt of the Earth” meaning he was good, honest and dependable. The phrase implies that someone is humble and doesn’t think of themselves as special, but their actions and character make them invaluable to their community. The apple sure didn’t fall far from that tree.
So, my whole life when I saw or thought of Mark Jones the phrase “Salt of the Earth” always came to mind. He embodied the phrase. He was someone I always looked forward to seeing.
He was our Lacrosse Goalie. I mention this because many decades later Mark spotted me from afar and I asked him how he recognized me after so many years. He recognized my type of movement and gate.
I was away from Geneva for many decades but in recent years I’ve been visiting Geneva more often and was delighted to see and speak with Mark. And I’m especially happy to meet his wife Kim who is the love of his life. Mark’s packed Memorial Service at St. Steven’s Church was symbolic of the high esteem and love the community feels for Mark.. He is surely missed and yet happily remembered.
Rest in Peace Mark C. Jones. Salt of the Earth.

In Loving Memory of Mark, AKA Coppertop
I didn’t have the luxury of knowing Mark for long, but the time we did share was unforgettable. Mark was more than just my fishing buddy; he was someone whose knowledge and humor left a lasting impression on me.
I remember our first fishing trip together vividly. We were out salmon fishing, taking turns reeling them in, when suddenly, one line zipped out with a force. Mark, with that knowing smile of his, said, "Oh, that's a big one—you pull it in, you deserve it." What I didn’t realize was that the line was copper, making it even more difficult to reel in. Every time I brought in a foot, the salmon would take five feet in the other direction. But Mark was right there, encouraging me, saying, "You're doing great, kid, keep going." Despite my frustration, he never let up with his support.
After what felt like an eternity, I finally landed the fish. That’s when Mark, with that twinkle in his eye, came clean about why the copper line was so much harder to manage. It was at that moment he became ‘Coppertop’ to me—a term of endearment that perfectly captured his sense of humor and the bond we shared.
Mark may be gone, but his spirit, his wisdom, and that unforgettable sense of humor will always stay with me. I will miss him dearly.

I enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with Mark as well as him joining me on several Viet Nam reunions. He enjoyed talking with pilots and crew members of 70 first assault helicopter co. Mark liked the way his ass fit in the pilot seat!
