Obituary of Alfred Anthony Liberio

Alfred Anthony Liberio GENEVA- Alfred Anthony Liberio lived a plentiful 94 years and went to Heaven on Wed. (July 27, 2016), at Geneva General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sun. (July 31), at the Palmisano-Mull Fuenral Home LLC, 28 Genesee St. Geneva. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m. Mon. (Aug. 1), at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Geneva. Entombment will follow in St. Mary's Mausoleum, with full military honors. Contributions may be directed to Our Lady of Peace Parish, 130 Exchange St. Geneva, NY 14456. He was the son of Italian immigrants, Vincenzo and Camilla Liberio and the last surviving member of his siblings: Dorothy, Raymond, John, Louis, Frank and Romeo. In 1950 he married the beautiful Catherine Bertino and together they raised three steadfast sons: Al Liberio (Elaine) of Palmyra, NY, Mark Liberio of Allen, TX, Tom Liberio of Miamisburg, OH and four beautiful, honorable daughters: Mary Ann Stasko (David) of Schoharie, NY, Laura Liberio of Geneva, NY, Lisa Soscia of Geneva, NY and Karen Struzik (Conrad) of Waterloo, NY. Al is survived by his wife, Catherine, his 7 children, 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Al was a graduate of St. Francis DeSales Grammar School and DeSales High School. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served valiantly and with honor during WWII in the Pacific Theatre from 1942-1945, including battles at Saipan, Kwajalein Atoll, Tinian and Iwo Jima. After the military, Al attended and graduated from the Freeman Business School in Geneva and then went on to study accounting in Philadelphia. He was a foreman on the building of the NYS Thruway during the 1950's. He worked for the NYS Dept. of Labor from 1961 to 1989 first as a building inspector. His most rewarding position at the Dept. of Labor was establishing apprentice training programs in a variety of trades. Al enjoyed awarding diplomas to the graduates of these programs. He and Catherine built their lives in Geneva, NY, raising and instructing their children in the love of God in the Catholic Church. He was a dedicated man of God actively participating in St. Francis DeSales Church as Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was also instrumental in establishing the Sons of Italy in Geneva and was elected president. Al was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion . Al was renowned in the community and had many, many friends who always spoke of him admirably and with fondness. He was a builder of the community; a man of integrity and a giver of respect. Al will be greatly missed by his family, his friends and the community of Geneva, but his contributions will live on for generations.
