Ethel "Sam" D. Scala GENEVA- Ethel "Sam" D. Scala, 72, passed away peacefully on Sun. (June 13, 2021), at F.F. Thompson Hospital, Canandaigua. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wed. (June 16), at the Palmisano-Mull Funeral Home LLC, 28 Genesee St. Geneva. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Thurs. (June 17), at St. Stephen's Church in Geneva. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Contributions may be directed to the American Diabetes Association, 160 Allens Creek Rd. Rochester, NY 14618 or the American Lung Association, 1595 Elmwood Ave. #B1 Rochester, NY 14620. Ethel was born on Dec. 16, 1948, in Geneva and was a daughter of the late Frederick and Mabel (Hilliker) Dermott. She graduated from DeSales High School in 1967. Ethel worked as a secretary for the athletic dept. at Hobart and William Smith Colleges for 38 years. She traveled to many places with her husband Mike. Together they visited Spain, Portugal, Scotland, England, Canada and went on 17 cruises that brought them to several places including, the Caribbean Islands and Mexico. Ethel and Mike were avid restauranteurs and knew all of the best places to enjoy a meal. They also enjoyed traveling to casinos. Ethel was known to have an eye for detail and aesthetic for family traditions. Ethel was an excellent cook and hosted many holiday meals for her family. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend who loved her family very much. She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Michael J. Scala, Jr. of Geneva; son, Michael J. (Marie-Ann) Scala III of Geneva; sisters, Janet Sneddon of Millbrook, NY and Dorothy Sobus of Seneca Falls; grandchildren, Christopher, Victoria, Isabella and Michael IV; scores of nieces and nephews. Ethel was predeceased by her brother, Fred Dermott.
