Growing up, we made many visits to Geneva and Albany. Aunt Elizabeth's station wagon rides were quite memorable. Everyone packed in like sardines, the wandering tribe of kids and the moms were gathered. My amazing mom rode shotgun lookout and we were off on our journey together to gather supplies from the local market.
In the back seats there was the motley crew; my siblings and me, a few of my cousins and perhaps a few more neighborhood kids and sometimes Sparky the dog... (Did we sneak him in?) Somewhere in the back there was a very coveted toy, an old 'View Master' on several trips. I also recall an eight track tape or two. No air conditioning, windows open, those were the days!
This poem I offer in memory of my Aunt Elizabeth, inspired her generosity of spirit and these journeys.
Dear Aunt Elizabeth
Dear Aunt Elizabeth
I remember the power
Of your gentle heart drum
Steadfast, strong in the background.
And the station wagon, your horse
Many passengers, fields of vision
You make space for us
Receive, welcome the panoramic view.
Treasure the View Master, behold
Look through glass lenses
See 3-D landscapes
Still image, blink of eye, wheel turns, new reveal.
Flashes of sunlight, lush lawn, flags, cornfields
Big Oak trees punctuate sky, starlight
Skipping white orbs on glass lake
Speed up, slow down, gear shift, seasons repeat.
Sightseer companions blink your eyes
Roll down the windows in the rain
Attune to the music of the enduring drum
Ride the winged horse in the wind.
Much love,
Barbara Wilker

Beatiful Barbara, thanks for sharing. It means so much to us. We have so many good memories of cruising with Mom throughout the years. In fact, about one month before her death, she and I went for a convertible ride down along Seneca Lake near her place. In recent years, Norm, Dave, Jeff, Sue and I took Mom on a lot of road trips, not to mention the outings she took with all her amazing care providers. Mom was a free spirit and loved to explore the country roads of our region.

We were very happy to spend time with your mother at the Can-Am a few years back. It was great to meet her. After Graham passed away she wrote us lovely letter in response to a note and card we had sent. Elizabeth was a very special lady.

Elizabeth was a free spirit …who loved her freedom to roam the country sides, pack a lunch for the day and either set sail on the Finger Lakes or find her toes on a grassy knoll at Sonnenberg Gardens or at a local park! What I loved most about Elizabeth was how genuine, loving and compassionate she was to everyone. I used to love day tripping to Cornell University to visit the gardens and enjoy an extravagant picnic filled with healthy eats with she and Chris, her son, in our younger more formative years. It was Elizabeth’s love for life, nature and gardening that inspired me to take up gardening in my adulthood years. She had an appreciation for the arts and music! So much so that she would allow Chris and all of his band friends play in his bedroom or garage at all hours of the night! I think back on it now and it brings a smile to my face! Perhaps she wanted “us” in her home safe rather than out finding trouble elsewhere. Regardless of her intentions, Elizabeth always supported her families life goals and passions. I loved having discussions with her over a cup of hot tea and milk in the evening hours! I loved how she’d rummage through refrigerator for leftovers and repurpose the ingredients into a yummy pot of soup or stew! There are so many memories I treasure having had with Elizabeth it’s hard to list just one. Elizabeth was truly a bright shining light! A light that will continue to shine in all of us whose lives she touched. Elizabeth will surely be missed in our physical world but I feel her even now as I lay my hand across my heart. Strong as ever in light, love and in spirit. My condolences to all of Elizabeth’s loved ones, she left behind her legacy within all of you. ❤️
